Before the coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi takes us to a café where people can travel throught time to the past and future

Before the coffee gets cold is a very peculiar book. The particularity of the story revolves around the fact that people can go back in time to meet their loved ones that visited the coffee. They are only able to meet them if they know the date and at what time they were at that coffee. What is exciting about it is that these visits come with rules. For instance, when the coffee is poured, the customers travel to the past but, they must drink up all the coffee before it gets cold otherwise they turn into a ghost. There are other very important rules involving time travel, one of which is that no matter what you do or say to the person you meet in the past; it will not alter the future. If a person dies, their fate is set and therefore, will never change.

The book recounts the experience of five people who have lost someone and wish to see them one more time. Something has been preventing the protagonists from moving on in their lives, hence this desire to go back in time to get closure.

I really enjoyed Before the coffee gets cold. The writing style was very visual. The stories were so touching that they got my eyes wet on more than one occasion. I loved the set of rules that made the idea of travelling not worth it or worth the risk depending on how desperate the travelers are. The rules emphasize urgency for the ones who are willing to go with them and that makes the reader on edge throughout the entire book. When you find out the reasons why they want to go back in the past just for a few minutes (the timeframe of a hot coffee), it melts your heart. I loved the fantasy aspect of the book and how it was tackled and implemented in the ordinary lives of our protagonists.
