The cat who saved books by Sosuke Natsukawa will make you reevaluate why books are important

After the loss of his grandfather, a bookworm teenager is visited by a cat in his bookshop that sets him on an adventure to rescue books.

I cannot elaborate too much on the blurb because you will not be surprised like I was when I read the book. The cat who saved books has a misleading title in my opinion. Very marketable, I must admit. I picked this book because of it, but it is misleading nonetheless. It is not the cat per say who saves the books but another character. I will not be able to go deep into why exactly I loved this book because it will reveal the plot and the fun parts. Something I do not want to spoil. As a result of that, the review is going to be more generic.

Most of the characters are interesting and easy to be fond of. Even those who are deemed to be perceived as bad end up being more nuanced and likable once they have been fleshed out. This leads me to my next point, which is the character’s development and arc. It works here. The motives, the enigmas, the settings which are a reflection of their inner self are well thought of. Everything makes sense. There is only one character that was brushed over with no purpose in the story or even in relation to the main character. We hear from this character at the beginning and then he disappears. I got a bit confused because it led me to think that there was going to be a big reveal involving him. But other than that, I fairly enjoy the book. The plot is imaginative. The enigmas are more complex than we would think. The writing style is descriptive in the way I like, which is to say, with meaning. The cat character is like every cat character I have read in all the books I have read so far. Witty, conceited and proud but kind-hearted. It might be the same cat jumping from books to books or into the minds of authors. The pace is really fast. The book can be read in one or two settings. I recommend this. It will make you smile and reevaluate why books are important to you.
