Spoiler alert
Bride is a very successful woman in the beauty industry despite having a harsh upbringing. The relationship with her mother has always been tumultuous. Why? Bride’s skin color. Because of her dark skin, her mother was unable to love her the way a mother should in the formative years of their children. This lack of affection in Bride’s childhood led her to do something that had huge consequences on the life of another character. She gave false testimony that had gotten a woman imprisoned for child sexual abuse.
Instead of giving a review, I will tell you what I wanted from this book.
I wanted to know more about bride and her mother’s relationship. I wanted her mother to be fleshed out. I was fishing for anything that could have given me insights into the innocent woman being thrown in prison for one of the worst crimes. I wanted to know how she navigated this world of prisoners and how it changed her. I wanted to know about bride’s decision later on as an adult about not telling the truth to the right people. I wanted more about the societal changes in regards to skin color shades while the protagonists aged. I wanted less of the pursuit of her ex-boyfriend. I got a glimpse of the stories I wanted to read, unfortunately.
It is a miss for me with all the respect I have for Tony Morrison and her body of work.
