Her poetry deals with any types of discrimination, the scars of colonialism, the nasty side of tourism, White supremacists, war, misogyny, masculinity and femininity, assimilation through language, self-love, healing and motherhood.
While reading a collection of modern poems, I evaluate the honesty, how the subject matter is tackled, the art and the creativity’s freedom. When reading Nayyirah Waheed’s work I cycled through shock, anger, hope, sadness, and relief. Her poems penetrate the human soul and expose a reality that can no longer be denied. Important issues are handled with a few words and a raw writing style. Like Kaur, she did not romanticize problems faced by certain people. I read Salt in an hour and a half and I am amazed how much more I learned about humanity in her book than in my Communications and Psychology course. I cannot single out a poem to reflect the quality of Salt. However, I can share a poem that complements my review.
