Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur is a collection of contemporary poems well-known in the instagram universe

Rupi Kaur is the author of two collections of modern poetry. Milk and honey being one of them captures the essence of what it is to be a woman by dealing with femininity, expectation, love, trauma, abuse, values, misogyny, break up and the healing process.

The first poems are heartbreaking. Rupi Kaur has demonstrated an ability to go deep into the worst feelings with simplicity. With just a few words, we embody the skin of despair and other complex human feelings. I wanted to put the book down because it was very overwhelming, but the intelligent and witted writing had me continue till the last page. No subject is taboo with Rupi. She does not romanticize hard topics such as rape, but sheds light on them with clarity. No sugar coat. She does not leave room for multiple interpretations. The subjects she discusses are straight forward. The tone, the pitch, the rhythm is strong andn I am sure, will reach a lot of people.  She peels off the layers that society has put on women and enlightens their grace, their wit, vulnerability, strength and weaknesses with no shame. I adored the poems related to the physical, especially sexual appetite and the body. It is charnel. We have found a poetess who does not keep women hidden behind the stigma and the preconceived ideas of them. Through her collections she has liberated women from the chain of shame, judgment, prejudice, and diminishing portrayal and given them back their voice.

I am not surprised by the acclamation  Rupi received for her first book. She is not only a talented poetess but a strong woman that has dared tell the truth in an unapologetic manner. I salute her. I was puzzled at the backlash she received, especially after I watched her  speech at Ted Talk. The visual presentation of her poems plays an important part in the overall effect.
