Thirteen by Tom Hoyle

A 13-year-old boy becomes the target of a cult called ‘the People” which believes that children born in the year of the millennium must die before they get past the age of 13. The cult’s determination knows no limits.  12 teens have been murdered so far .Adam is turned into the ultimate sacrifice that will allow the cult to take over the world. Will Adam celebrate his 14th birthday?

From the beginning, the narrative draws you into the story. The suspense makes you both hold your breath in fear and run through the book frantically at the same time.  The characters are really charismatic, either lovable or detestable. You can’t really stop reading until the last line. I liked the way the author shaped the character of Adam, who gradually loses his innocence while facing traumatic events.

It is definitely worth reading.

The cryptic book cover is gripping and amazingly clever. Even its colour hides a meaning.

Sequence :Spiders 2014, Escape 2015.  I have not read them yet. I hope they will be as good as the first one.

Warning: Quite violent sometimes – red flag for very young children
