The Bell Jar is partially autobiographical. It is believed that Silvia Plath wrote her story to help soothe the scars that misfortune left on her. Her novel is lyrical, honest and sad. The narrative goes back to the beginning of her adult life and recounts the story of a woman who has always felt something missing since she turned 8. She loses control over her life as she faces the unfairness of a society marked by gender differences. The moment she is getting checked into a psychiatric hospital is poignant. Despite the fact that we know the protagonist to be psychologically fine, she is seen as mentally disturbed by the people who surround her. The electroshocks that she experiences add more sadness to her story. I utterly screamed in fear she would be once and for all crazy and unable to see clearly ever again. Nonetheless, her ability to observe the world and see it with words is shattered by conventions. Silvia Plath was a remarkable writer and poet. The Bell Jar is an unforgettable novel. It was published a month after she took her life in 1963.
