In one of his interviews, Junot Diaz said he wanted his book to have an intellectual approach without making it too difficult for the reader to understand his points.Diaz explores the fear of intimacy, commitment and of loneliness. He does it without following the cliched formula. The book is a reflection of love. No matter how doomed a relationship may be, we always hold on to the expectation that love will be stronger than anything and win through. Diaz strikes the perfect balance between sadness and humor. It also mirrors the reality of the hardships experienced by immigrant families.Diaz writes about difficult subjects in a way that allows us to accompany the compelling and fascinating Yunior in his “intricate” journey. You hate and love him because he is complicated, multi-dimensional – human.
Who is Junot Díaz?Junot Diaz was born in the Dominican Republic. At the age of six, his family migrated to the United States right after the Dominican dictatorship ended. He lived in New Jersey during his adolescence and young adult life. In college, Díaz was a student activist who secretly aspired to become an artist. He now teaches creative writing at MIT/ Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has already published four books. He predominantly writes about race, immigration, immigrant emigrant families and the Caribbean story. Through his stories he raises awareness about political, economic and social issues. He uses social networks to engage people in discussion around these societal issues, such as Facebook, and participates in Dream Project that promotes equal opportunities to learn for Dominican children through transformative education programs. His book The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao was a major bestseller, which won him the Pulitzer Prize and earned him worldwide recognition.Design by Rodrigo CorralThe book cover is really eye-catching. I like the idea of a disintegrated heart constructed with colorful bricks. It is consistent with the theme of the book. The coloured bricks seem to represent the women Junior encountered and the heart that is fading away, as a symbol of his doomed relationship.
