On the isolated Maine island, the people are gathering together in the local school transformed into a shelter to protect themselves from the coming snow storm that is about to hit the town. Everyone knows each other and things go pretty well until a strange man appears out of nowhere and kills an old woman in her house. Under the shock of the unusual event, people start panicking. However, the man is quickly apprehended by the police and put in custody. This unknown man who presents himself as Linoge seems to know a great deal about everyone’s ugly little secret in the town. The atmosphere gets tense and nerve-racking. Inexplicable and terrible things start happening and people die. In the meanwhile, the man keeps repeating “give me what I want and I will go away”, which leaves us with the feeling that he may have something to do with what is happening on the island.
Reading a play script was fascinating. I read it while I was watching the movie. Every little detail is described in the play. It does not only describe the movement of the camera or the landscape, but it explains what feeling must be drawn to the audience by incorporating this or that element or way of acting. It kind of took me a while since I was reading and watching the movie at the same time, but it was worth my time. Through this process, I became more aware of the importance of details in movies that may seem insignificant to our eyes, but, play a great role in our enjoyment and, most importantly, in our understanding of the movie. These details trigger in the audience the desired emotion or state of mind to fully prepare them to immerge themselves completely into the story. Very interesting
Steven King is a genius when it comes to inhabiting his characters’ consciousness. He uses the voice of Linoge to enter the psychology of the most normal looking person and demonstrates that even ordinary people have hidden deviant behaviours. Linoge is primarily portrayed as Lucifer; he wants the “so-called” good people to face their true selves, which are wicked and capable of cruelty. It is easy to go through. However, if you decide to read it while watching the movie, it will take you a while to finish it because you will have to stop and rewind the movie many times to catch up with your reading. Despite this, it is not complicated to follow the story – it is just heavy in description which is quite normal! It is a playscript.
