Every seven years, a healthy baby is taken in the middle of the night and is replaced by a sick, deathly and ugly looking one. Sixteen years ago, a creepy baby was placed in the crib of Mike Doyles. There begins the life of the replacement “Mackie” among ordinary people. The story repeats itself until one day, the sister of a dead child is convinced that what had been buried was not her beloved sister. She is determined to unravel the secret of the town and starts by interrogating in more than a harassing manner Mackie.
Brenna Yvanoff is a promise. The replacement freaked me out. Anything that portrays demonic or revenant babies scares the hell out of me. The author could not fail with this well-known recipe. She offers a tour of the creepy underworld and its disturbing, repulsing inhabitants with so much detail that it follows me into my dreams. I really liked Macky. Although he is described as abnormal by human standards in this fiction, I found him really interesting, honest, touching and rather normal by my standards once you peeled off the layers that cover his personality. The character of Peta is nicely elaborated too; she is bold, brave and beautiful in an unconventional way. The introvert /extrovert dynamic duo always works. Every chapter leaves us with an intriguing puzzle. It did not take long to finish reading The Replacement. The book cover is striking. Once again, I fell for the book cover first. I must admit that I like being totally oblivious to the story sometimes when I buy a book. I follow my instincts, which are greatly influenced by the book cover and the first page. The Replacement ‘s book cover is one of my favourites. It is eerie and frightening.
