Azel is obsessed with plotting her death. She finds it more and more difficult to live the life she no longer recognizes as hers. With the weight of her isolation, she quickly fell into despair. Haunted by the thought of suicide, she walks around in the darkness with her only voice as company. Azel thinks that committing suicide is not a total act of cowardice but rather bravery and so, it must require some motivation. One day, at work, while she is wandering the page of her favorite website “Smooth Passage” dedicated to successful suicides, she stumbles on the forum “…” offering a partner in joint suicide. She is convinced that she has the solution to her problem and gets in touch with FrozenRobot Aka Roman who is looking for his future partner. In the process of planning on ending their lives together, Azel and Roman develop a friendship that takes an unexpected turn. Azel begins to see things from another perspective and, as a result of that, she questions her plan.
I usually do not give that much away in the little blurb, but I find it rather difficult to avoid spoiling the mystery of the plot, since the whole book was quite easy to figure out after I read the first ten pages. Except for the predictability of the story, it was a nice read. At times, it is a bit cheesy, but nothing is dull. Jasmine Warga tackles the sensitive topic of depression amongst teenagers and chooses love as a last chance therapy. I must admit that her writing is amazing. The narrative is the reason why I went through the book in two days. Her style got me carried away. The minimalist style focuses on the description of the feelings and state of mind of each character. Although Roman was not the protagonist, I found him deeply moving and heartbreaking; he is mopey and self-loathing. Azel’s characteristics are more layered. I think her character was meant to be stronger (far from being doomed). The narrative spots furtive dim lights which indicate that she has always had hope, but she was unable to grasp it. I think that her hope manifests through her interest in classical music and science, since these are the only things she holds onto. It is Jasmine Warga’s first novel.
It is a nice book cover. However, I do not get it. It is textured with linen-like material with seams.
